5 days of Tokyo in Autumn

 japan in autumn

If you're contemplating on when you should visit Japan, I highly recommend to go some time during the autumn season! Whether you are visiting the outskirts or the city, the vibrant colour of the tree leaves would make your trip a perfect one.

I went to Japan at the end of autumn (end of November - early December) and was quite worried that the tree leaves would just be fallen leaves on the ground. But to my surprise, it wasn't that bad at all! On the other hand, I did not expect the weather to be cold to the extent that I need to use gloves. Or maybe I'm just not used to it.

DAY 0

Hotel check-in

emblem hostel

I've decided to stay sightly away from the city for a much spacious, well furnished and budget hostel. There were definitely other budget hostel in the city but most of the reviews were quite bad so I've decided to just trust my instincts and stay at Emblem Hostel. I have dedicated a post on Emblem Hostel here. Do check it out if you don't mind travelling an hour to the city everyday! I personally didn't feel that it was a hassle since the hostel was really near the train station.

I started exploring Tokyo right from the heart of it and I landed myself at the Imperial Palace East Gardens. My whole trip mainly focused on exploring the gardens of Japan since the whole point of going in autumn was for the amazing scenery. Here I've shared more photos on how the Imperial Palace East Gardens looked like during autumn!

DAY 2

Shinjuku Gyoen + Shibuya Crossing + Microcosmos (Matcha Pancake)

Another day, another garden. Before the gardens close at 4pm, I dropped by Shinjuku Gyoen. The entrance of the garden was just a beauty filled with red, yellow, green leaves. However, since I went at the end of autumn, at some point, I only get to see fallen leaves. Check out more about Shinjuku Gyoen here to see how it looks like at the end of autumn!

After the sunset, I went to Shibuya area to hunt for matcha pancakes and happen to pass by the iconic Shibuya Crossing. It was really crowded at the crossing, so I took a few snaps and went on to look for what I was at Shibuya for - matcha pancakes!

Drifting apart from the cliche matcha ice-cream, I wanted to try something more interesting and managed to found this amazing matcha pancake. Apart from the big serving, this matcha pancake is fluffy and rich in matcha taste. It's a 9 out of 10. Detailed review can be found here!

After having the pancake, I had some serious food coma and slept through the night once I reached back to my hotel.

DAY 3

Rikugien Garden

Having spent two days in the city, I've placed Rikugien Garden in my itinerary for the third day. I highly recommend visiting this garden. This garden is a must visit when in Tokyo because it is a pure beauty. This post talks about Rikugien Garden in detail and the best time to be there to have the best experience.

I've planned my gardens visit in such a way that the autumn colors are at its peak even though it was the end of the autumn season, and I would suggest you to do the same.

Today marks the last day I'll be in Tokyo. As I was planning to head to Kyoto by train, I had to transit at Tokyo Station. This was when I realize what goodies I've been missing out all this while.

Tokyo Station is filled with so many, SO MANY snacks and gifts you can snag home. It's a non-stop snack shopping location! I've compiled a list of gifts that you can get while you're at Tokyo Station here. Not forgetting the signature Tokyo banana at all.

And off to Kyoto! Don't miss out on the beauty of Kyoto too! Check it out here.

Japan had been a beauty in autumn and I've separated most of the post into single dedicated posts so that I can share more photos and make sure this post won't get too lengthy.
